In 1830s rural England, a courageous young girl, envied by women for her beauty, lusted after by men, is accused of witchcraft and forced to rise above the prejudice of many people in the community in which she lives.

Part 1
Returning home from a wedding, 19-year-old Tilly Trotter is attacked by Hal McGrath, who plans to get his hands on her family's money by forcing her into marriage. Her screams save her, but the incident prompts some villagers to brand her a witch.
Part 2
Following the destruction of their home by the McGraths, Tilly and her grandmother are forced to live a life of solitude.
Part 3
Tilly and Katie Drew begin working at Sopwith's mine. Despite the hardships of life in the pit, she enjoys feeling like part of the family.
Part 4
Tilly's arrival at Highfield reawakens old resentments among the staff.
