He relates the incident in a flash back to Kiran, about how he, as an engineer officer, accompanied an infantry unit in a surprise raid on an enemy bridge where there was severe hand to hand fighting and where Harildar Kalyan Singh of the infantry Unit sacrificed his life by saving Vikram.
