Her husband and mother-in-law returned without her claiming that Surjit changed her travel plans, however Surjit's brother Jagdeesh reported her as a missing person to the police. Law enforcement faced a wall of silence from the tight knit Sikh community. A women who knew what had happened to Surjit feared she would be the next to disappear if she chose to reveal the truth.
